Frequently asked questions

The questions people ask most. Every screen of the app also has its own “?”, which answers the question about that screen.

The group

Do I need an account?

No. You join a group through its link: no sign-up, no password, no app to install. Only the person who subscribes has a key to keep, and the other members still have nothing to create.

How do I invite someone?

Tap “Invite” on the group page. Your phone offers to send the link; otherwise it is copied, or shown for you to copy. Whoever opens it picks their name from the list, or adds their own.

Who can see the group?

Anyone who has its link: the link is the group’s key, so do not post it publicly. If it has travelled too far, “Revoke shared links” cuts the old links for everyone; then share the new one from “Invite”. Devices that already synced keep what they already had.

I changed phones: how do I get my groups back?

Open a group’s link again on the new device. To lose nothing, the “Your access” screen copies all your links at once, and your personal space, nine free words, finds all your groups on another phone. Without a link or those nine words, nobody can give a group back, not even us: there is no account.

Does the app work without a connection?

For a group already opened on this device, yes: it reloads, your entries are kept on the phone and go out by themselves when the connection is back. A page never opened on the device cannot show without a connection: open your group once before you leave.

Can I install it like an app?

Yes, from your browser’s menu: “Add to Home Screen” (on iPhone, the Share button, then “Add to Home Screen”). On iPhone, notifications only work once the app has been added to the home screen.

How many people can a group have?

30 at most. To make room, tap a name under “Who is sharing” and remove the person: this works once their account is settled, with nothing owed either way. What they already entered stays in the accounts, and “Bring back”, under “Former members”, returns them to the group.

How do I delete a group?

At the very bottom of the group page, by typing its name to confirm. It is erased from our server, permanently, and from this device. Devices that already synced it keep their copy.

Expenses

How do I split other than equally?

The form offers four ways: equally, by shares (two shares for someone who came as a pair), by percentage, or by exact amounts. Tap a name to take it out of the split.

Where does the leftover cent go?

When an amount does not divide evenly, the leftover cent moves to a different person from one expense to the next, so it is never always the same one who pays it. Every device in the group computes exactly the same thing.

What about an expense in another currency?

Pick its currency next to the amount. The app fetches the European Central Bank rate for the expense’s date; correct it if your bank applied another one. If it is not available, you type it in. The rate is frozen with the expense: it never moves afterwards.

How do I correct or delete an expense?

Tap it in the list. Any member of the group can correct or delete it, and every change is dated and signed in its history, visible to everyone. A deleted expense no longer counts in the balances.

Several people paid for the same expense?

The app records one payer per expense. Enter one expense per person who paid instead, split the same way: the result is the same.

What is the note for?

To say what the label does not: “wine included”, “paid in cash”. Up to 500 characters, on an expense as well as on a repayment. The whole group sees it, and it goes into the summary.

How does receipt scanning work?

From “Add an expense”, tap “Split a receipt” and take a photo of it. The lines read are shown and you choose who had what before saving. If the photo was hard to read, the app says so: check every amount, and enter the expense by hand if one of them is wrong. Scanning has a daily limit, shared by every group.

What the subscription includes

Paying back

How do I know who owes whom?

“See who pays who back”, on the group page. Two ways to count: “Real debts”, where everyone pays back the people they shared with, or “Fewest transfers”, with fewer transfers, but sometimes to someone you shared nothing with.

How do I get paid back?

In “Settle up”, say once how people should pay you back: bank transfer (IBAN), PayPal, Revolut, Wise or Lydia. “Get paid back” then gives you the link to send; for a transfer in euros, a code to scan also shows on your screen. The IBAN is checked by its check digits: a typo is refused right away, not by the bank.

Someone paid me back: what now?

Tap “Already settled”: the repayment is recorded and taken off the balances, with a note if you want one. A mistake? Delete it under “Recorded repayments”: the whole group will see the correction.

Can I remind someone who is slow to pay?

Reminders are part of the subscription: they notify the person on their phone, without saying anything about the amount. In the meantime, the simplest is still to send them your “Get paid back” link.

How do I send the summary at the end of the trip?

“Summary”, on the group page: the total, where everyone stands, who pays back whom, and the detail with the notes. Copy the text, share it, or download it as a spreadsheet. It is computed on your device, even without a connection.
